Solar FAQ
Straight answers on cost, Arizona incentives, net billing, and going solar with a local, in-house team.
Tucson averages more than 280 sunny days and roughly 6 peak sun hours a day, one of the best solar resources in the country. Paired with Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and APS rates that keep climbing, most homeowners see a strong return, with typical payback in about 8 to 12 years and decades of low-cost power after that. A free assessment shows your exact savings based on your roof, energy usage, and utility.
Most residential systems in the Tucson area run about $15,000 to $30,000 before incentives, depending on system size (kW), panel type, and whether you add battery storage. A typical 2,000-square-foot home needs roughly a 6 to 9 kW system. We design every system around your actual kWh usage and give you a fixed, itemized quote, with cash, financing, and lease options and no surprise add-ons.
Arizona offers a state income-tax credit worth 25% of your system cost up to $1,000 (ARS §43-1083), a 100% solar sales-tax exemption, and a property-tax exemption so panels don't raise your assessed home value. A 30% federal solar tax credit has also applied to purchased systems, though federal rules are changing, so we confirm exactly what you currently qualify for. Financing and leasing can also let you capture incentives without paying cash up front.
Arizona has replaced traditional net metering with “net billing.” Excess solar you send to the grid is credited at an export (buyback) rate set by your utility, such as TEP, APS, or Trico, rather than the full retail rate. Your rate plan matters a lot, so we size your system and recommend a plan that maximizes credits. Adding a battery lets you store extra production for the evening instead of exporting it cheaply.
Solar can dramatically cut your bill, but most customers still have a small monthly charge. Utilities like TEP and APS bill fixed service fees, and under net billing you may pull grid power at night that daytime export credits do not fully offset. Right-sizing the system, choosing the best rate plan, and adding battery storage are how we get your bill as close to zero as realistically possible.
It depends on your annual kWh usage, roof space, and shading, not square footage alone. A typical Tucson home needs about 15 to 25 panels (roughly 6 to 9 kW). Arizona utilities also cap systems at around 100 to 125% of your past usage, so oversizing is not allowed. We pull your usage history and design a system that offsets as much of your bill as the rules and your roof allow.
Paying cash delivers the best lifetime savings and full ownership of the incentives. A solar loan lets you go solar for little or nothing down while still owning the system. A lease or PPA means a third party owns the panels and you pay a fixed monthly amount, often less than your current bill, with little upfront cost. We walk you through the trade-offs in plain English (see our blog on leasing vs. financing for a deeper breakdown).
Truly free solar does not exist. That wording almost always refers to $0-down leases or PPAs where you pay monthly instead of upfront, so you are financing the system, not getting it for free. Those can be excellent options, but the numbers matter. We always show you cash, loan, and lease side by side so you can choose what actually saves you the most.
A standard grid-tied solar system shuts off during an outage to protect utility workers, so panels alone will not power your home when the grid is down. To keep the lights on you add battery storage such as a Tesla Powerwall, which stores your solar energy and automatically powers your home during outages. As a certified Tesla Powerwall installer, we can design a system built around reliable backup power.
Quality solar panels last 25 to 30+ years and still produce around 85 to 90% of their original output after 25 years. Saguaro Solar backs installations with a 25-year system warranty, and equipment such as Enphase microinverters and Tesla Powerwall carry their own manufacturer warranties. Because we install with in-house crews (no subcontractors) and are dual-licensed in solar and roofing, your roof and system are protected end to end.
From signed agreement to switched on, most residential projects take about 4 to 8 weeks. The installation itself is usually 1 to 3 days; the rest is custom design, city and utility permitting, and inspection and interconnection with TEP or APS. Our in-house team handles every step, design, permits, installation, and activation, so you are not chasing subcontractors or paperwork.
